Back-to-School Health Checklist

It's that time of year again - back to school! While the students in our lives are busy getting back into the swing of academics, it's a great time for all of us to focus on our own health. Let's get organized and make a back-to-school health checklist to start this (school) year on the right foot.

 

1. Schedule Your Annual Check-Up: Before the school year gets too hectic, let's schedule your annual physical and gynecological exams. If you haven't yet had an eye exam or a skin check with the dermatologist this year, it's a great time to get those on the schedule as well. Routine check-ups are crucial for maintaining your overall health and catching any potential problems early.

2. Focus on Your Sleep: This time of year, sleep schedules often change due to students returning to school. Whether or not that is the case in your household, it is wise to take a good look at the amount and the quality of sleep that you are getting. Adequate and quality sleep is essential to overall health, weight management, and immune system support. Set some goals for what time it is lights-out and the number of solid hours you are devoting to restful sleep.  

3. Focus on Nutrition: As routines shift, it’s essential to pay attention to your diet. Incorporate a balanced mix of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your meals. Planning ahead for meals and meal prepping can make it easier to maintain good nutrition when the calendar gets packed. 

4. Prioritize Mental Health: The transition back to school can be stressful. Make time for self-care activities that help you unwind, such as spending time with friends, meditation, or simply enjoying a good book. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

5. Be Active: Regular exercise is key to maintaining both physical and mental health. Find an activity you enjoy, whether it’s a brisk walk, a dance class, or a gym workout, and schedule it into your routine several times a week.

 

Taking the time to prioritize your health during this busy time of year will help you feel rejuvenated and healthy! Remember, taking care of yourself is essential not only for your well-being but also for supporting those around you.

Dr. Eye is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
